Carol O’Callaghan explores keys design directions for the season at London Design Week and how to source the looks locally at EZ Living Interiors.
Think fashion week but for interiors, the ultimate destination for us tribe of home lovers who would rather splurge on a rug than an outfit, or spring for a cushion update instead of shoes, although you might need a particularly comfortable pair to tread the miles of retail avenues at Design Centre, Chelsea Harbour, where over 500 brands are on show, and for a week played host to London Design Week.
It was right on time as there’s something about spring which brings out the nesting instinct, along with a roll of bin bags for a marathon declutter, leaving our spaces clean, clear and ripe for new input and a touch of creativity.
With coincidental timing, discovery platform Pinterest, where we all love to pull our interiors projects together, just published data showing ROI adults aged 18 - 44 (33%) are expecting to spend money on refreshing their home each month and one in 10 considers it to be more important than buying a new car.
That sounds just about right: why change your car when you can indulge in interiors projects you’ll actually spend far more time in?
First up, the massive shift at London Design Week this year was the reimagining of minimalism. Brilliant white and hard lines are out, softer edges and a mellowing of white into warm cream is decidedly in.
It didn’t happen overnight, however; like all interior trends it’s been slowly building over several years. It’s still minimalism though, just not as we knew it.
Seamlessly blending form and function, it’s a strong take on the neutral palette, with super-tactile fabrics giving them a 3-D quality. Angles give way to softened curves to add an element of surprise.
Get the look: As the dedicated dining room makes a comeback and comfortable seating is essential for post-dinner chats, try the off-white Malorie curved fabric chair (€199); or the sandy-hued sculptural Chloe (€219) which transitions to a bedroom for multi-function. Afterwards, sink into the soft curves of the two-seater Oswald ivory bouclé sofa (€799).
