Get the London Look

Carol O’Callaghan explores keys design directions for the season at London Design Week and how to source the looks locally at EZ Living Interiors.

Think fashion week but for interiors, the ultimate destination for us tribe of home lovers who would rather splurge on a rug than an outfit, or spring for a cushion update instead of shoes, although you might need a particularly comfortable pair to tread the miles of retail avenues at Design Centre, Chelsea Harbour, where over 500 brands are on show, and for a week played host to London Design Week.

It was right on time as there’s something about spring which brings out the nesting instinct, along with a roll of bin bags for a marathon declutter, leaving our spaces clean, clear and ripe for new input and a touch of creativity.

With coincidental timing, discovery platform Pinterest, where we all love to pull our interiors projects together, just published data showing ROI adults aged 18 - 44 (33%) are expecting to spend money on refreshing their home each month and one in 10 considers it to be more important than buying a new car.

That sounds just about right: why change your car when you can indulge in interiors projects you’ll actually spend far more time in?

First up, the massive shift at London Design Week this year was the reimagining of minimalism.  Brilliant white and hard lines are out, softer edges and a mellowing of white into warm cream is decidedly in.

It didn’t happen overnight, however; like all interior trends it’s been slowly building over several years. It’s still minimalism though, just not as we knew it.

New Minimalism

Seamlessly blending form and function, it’s a strong take on the neutral palette, with super-tactile fabrics giving them a 3-D quality. Angles give way to softened curves to add an element of surprise.

Get the look: As the dedicated dining room makes a comeback and comfortable seating is essential for post-dinner chats, try the off-white Malorie curved fabric chair (€199); or the sandy-hued sculptural Chloe (€219) which transitions to a bedroom for multi-function. Afterwards, sink into the soft curves of the two-seater Oswald ivory bouclé sofa (€799).

Fruit Salad

It’s total joy with a palette of tutti-frutti colours  -   lemon, lime, pink, and coral  -  adding an optimistic summer vibe in a mix of different decorative styles including florals, strong plains and geometrics.

But rather than it being an all-over look, this design direction focuses on accessories. Think clear glass vases for summer blooms, decorated with random paint daubs, and solid painted vessels to stand on a coffee table making an on-trend design statement.

Get the look: The Nanon clear glass vase with coral painterly daubs adds a subtle touch of the fruit salad colour trend (€19); or the Deco ceramic matt sand vase with its organic pink stripe (€22). Try the Topaz Modern Pekoe rug with its soft pink and ochre in a geometric look and carved-out pile (from €85); and Lemonade wall art (€29).

Verdant Vibe

This design direction celebrates all shades of green, from pretty and fresh palm house motifs to scenic woodland landscapes, reminiscent of a dream summerhouse. Picture curling up by a wood burner with a cup of tea whilst the doors are flung open to the scents and sounds of spring.

Get the look: The Fia velvet cushion details exotic blooms with a tactile velvet feel (€49). The Green Glass table lamp with its marble effect (€105); Paper rope hurricane lamp with on-trend green stripe for evenings in the garden (€15); and the organic shapes of the cream and green stoneware bowl and plate options (bowls from €6, plates from €8).

Pared Back Luxe

This design direction takes accessories, art and furniture with character and adds to an interior design with a palette of caramel, rusts, olive and warm metallics.

Get the look: Tidal brown marble dining table (€1099); Caja marble table lamp (€89); Reign Modern Infuse rug by Kukoon (€85); or an outsize seashell ceramic ornament (€18) which can be paired with a coral reef-style ornament (€15) for a summer beachside vibe.
