Soft Landing

Choosing the best mattress is simply finding the one that is best for you, but it's still daunting with so much choice and so many factors to consider.

The Basics

A good night's sleep should be the perfect restorative to face the day ahead, but if your mattress is past its best, it might be time to reconsider your relationship with the place your spend one third of your life.

To help make sense of it all and find what is best for your needs, Claire Spencer, store manage at EZ Living Interiors, Mahon Point, Cork, has clear direction for customers, starting with the basics. "Ask yourself, what do you like or dislike about your current mattress? Is it too firm, too soft, or doesn't have support in certain areas?"

But before you start getting comfortable trying out a mattress outside your price range, Claire says, "Decide how much you have to spend, and the experienced sales staff will help you get the best possible mattress for your needs within that."

"The Conrad gives that boutique hotel feeling as it has a soft fluffy top layer for extra cloud-like comfort," Claire explains. "The Respa Regent would be another option. They offer great value, and our customers agree as both of these are top sellers.

Making The Right Choice

"It's easy to be overwhelmed by choice," she adds. "Don't try out too many mattresses or you'll get confused. Try three to five. Lie on the bed for five to fifteen minutes. If you have a partner, bring them with you or at least get them to sign off on the final decision.

Did you know that if you're an athlete or sporty type you tend to have a warmer sleeping experience? So, too, do women dealing with menopausal symptoms which can help to inform mattress choice.

"A mattress with cooling layers on top will take away heat, like the Respa Gel Supreme," says Claire. "Think about the top layer also when it comes to elderly customers. A gel topper can help support frailer bones."

Sizing

Being clear too, about what size mattress will fit your bedframe is crucial nowadays as we also have European bed measurements to contend with.

"If you're not sure, go home and measure, especially if you're buying a six foot," says Claire. "If access is tight you might want to consider a rolled-up mattress or two three-foot mattresses zipped together which is easier to get upstairs."

Simple Home Maintenance

Once your mattress has settled in at home simple maintenance will ensure keeping it in optimal working condition. Vacuuming regularly to keep mites from snuggling into the warm and humid landscape is a starting point as is purchasing a mattress protector which can be washed as frequently as bedding.

Claire also recommends rotating the mattress twice a year. "Rotate it, don't flip it, and do it when the clocks change, that makes it easy to remember."
